Since our military efforts in the Middle East are mostly about keeping the oil flowing (for the Chinese, Indians, and other Asians), I have wondered what paying for those military efforts might mean in terms of a gas tax. That is paying for the war in Iraq with a tax on gasoline. Now Mathew Stein's article "A Freight Train Full of Dollars" on the Huffington Post has given me some rough numbers to work with. He says "America imports roughly 10 million barrels of oil every day. At the current price of about $150 a barrel, that equals a whopping $1.5 billion that gets sent out of our country each and every day to keep America 'well oiled.'" And "that we spend another $1/2 billion a day on military expenditures protecting those who supply and produce the oil we import from the Persian Gulf. This figure includes the price tag for the war and occupation in Iraq."
So, using very simple and crude math, it seems like what the war cost is about what we pay to import oil. So doubling the price of imported oil with a tax to pay for the war might be appropriate. So let's double the price of gasoline to pay as we go for the wars and occupations in the Middle East. Say from $4 per gallon to $8 per gallon.
I know, I know, this leaves out important issues. Please feel free to correct me with better thinking and data. Show me a better calculation!
