Following on my post “Why don’t we have a statewide virtual
school” (here), in which I suggested Oregon could save money by moving more
students to online education, I looked up the fees at two online schools used
currently by Oregon students: BYU Independent Study and S-K Online. For both I
calculated the fees for a typical ninth grade student taking six courses
(English, Algebra, Biology, American History, Spanish, Health/Art).
Brigham Young University, Independent Study (here), charges $124 for tuition and materials per 0.5 credit. For six credits (12 times $124), total would be $1,488, or the annual cost for a typical ninth grade student.
Salem-Keizer Online (here) charges tuition of $265 per 0.5
credit for students living outside the boundaries of Salem-Keizer Public
Schools. Not all courses are available each term. 12 times $265 is $3,180, or
the annual tuition cost for a typical ninth grade student.
The State School Fund, last I knew, paid local school districts an average of about $6,100 per student per year.
