President Obama today (7/7/10) added to his efforts
to increase US exports by creating an Export Council composed of corporate and
labor leaders as part of his National Export Initiative. From what he said (I’ve
not seen the list), there are no educational leaders on the Council. As Obama says:
This isn’t just about where America’s jobs are today. This is where America’s jobs will be tomorrow. Ninety five percent of the world’s customers and fastest growing markets are beyond our borders.
So, Mr. President, how do you thinks today’s
students can sell to that ninety-five percent without speaking their languages.
Where are your proposals for more foreign language immersion programs and for a
national effort to promote Go Global High School Study Abroad programs all
across the US?
As you say: “We are going to have to change how we
do business.” How about changing how we educate as well? We are just not competitive now.
Here’s my clip from his remarks. The full twenty-five
minute speech is on C-span here.
