Lawn signs in favor of Portland Public Schools’ two May levies are popping up around Portland like yellow spring flowers. They’re colorful, childlike, and, with that heart in the middle, they tend to evoke warm fuzzy feelings. We all love our children and all the children of Portland. We’d like to show them love. And we’d like to love our schools and their teachers, and, at some level, we do.
But the problem is we are also adults and so we are responsible for the education of the children in our community. And, unfortunately, our educational leaders are behaving irresponsibly in putting two levies before us that would fund an outdated, inadequate and inefficient school system. Significant changes, not just more money, are needed.
So what we need here and now is a bit of tough love, as in two "no" votes, to tell our school leaders that they need to make some of the changes they are reluctant to make before we can support funding levies for anything. It’s what adults do.
