Given the right circumstances, teachers can and will support immersion programs. From the Oregonian article “Teachers throw support behind language immersion for Tigard-Tualatin School District” by Sally Ho (here):
Dozens of Metzger Elementary School staff took to the Tigard-Tualatin School District Board in support of launching a dual-language immersion program.
In a presentation to the school board at Monday night's meeting, Metzger Principal Kraig Sproles said the school was ready to take on a Spanish language immersion program. That's because four years ago, a proposal was first tossed around at the school and steps were taken -- including hiring teachers and other staff and extensive training -- to a launch that never was.
Teachers of all grade levels spoke to the board about the importance of an immersion program to close the achievement gap at the school and in the district, as well as the academic benefits of bilingual literacy for all students. Sproles also reported more than 90 percent of his 27 core teachers interviewed said they supported the program.
The school has always had a demand to meet: More than 40 percent of this year's kindergarteners speak Spanish at home……
Thank you very much for posting and sharing this great article. It is so interesting. I want to know some other information about this site.
