In April, I criticized the Salem-Keizer School District for having 17 majority Hispanic schools that were without Spanish dual language immersion programs (here). In June, I apologized. Salem-Keizer School District does have Literacy Squared programs, a transitional variant of immersion, in those schools (here), but the school district was then not able to give me a count of the kindergarteners in the Literacy Squared program. They have now done so.
21.2%, or 685, of Salem Keizer kindergarteners are in the Literacy Squared programs. These are the counts by school for 2013-14.
In 2013-14, 39.6% of the students enrolled in Salem-Keizer were Hispanics. 25.6% of Salem-Keizer kindergartners were in either immersion or Literacy Squared programs.
Including the Salem-Keizer Literacy Squared kindergarteners in the statewide count of immersion students boosts the percentage of kindergartners in immersion programs from 6.6% to 8.2%. See here for prior count.
