As the Oregonian today points out (here), "Many of the most influential people in Oregon will gather Monday at the Oregon Convention Center for the 13th annual Oregon Leadership Summit. Once again, as I wrote in 2010 (here), "There is a sad pattern of neglect by the business community of the need to give Oregon graduates a new set of foreign language skills for the 21st century global economy."
On the up side, the 2015 Leadership Summit Policy Playbook does have the following section on international trade with its figure 7 showing "Shares of Middle Class Consumption 2000-2050."
On the down side, there is no call for stronger foreign language and study abroad programs in the Summit's educational proposals.
Oregon's business community continues to fail Oregon's future. We are not getting the kind of globally aware and globally competitive leadership we need from our business community.
