The first meeting of the PPS Dual Language Immersion Expansion Committee was held Wednesday afternoon (9/21/16) at Hosford Middle School. There were about twenty committee members present. Introductory information and data were presented. Materials are now posted online at the Committee’s website here.
Given the important priority of expanding DLI program to English Language Learners, the most significant chart presented was the one above. It shows counts of 2015-16 kindergarteners not then in a dual language immersion program. The blue columns represent native speakers of the language listed at the bottom. The red column shows the count of English Language Leaners in that language. ELLs are included in the count of native speakers.
For the targeting the development of additional DLI programs, the most important number, IMHO, is the count of ELL kindergarteners not in dual language immersion programs.
If a typical DLI kindergarten class has 26 students and 50% are native speakers of the target language (the other 50% are usually native English speakers), then there would be 13 native target language speaking kindergarteners in each class.
Therefore, in order to provide a DLI immersion program for each of the 87 Spanish ELLs, 7 additional Spanish dual language immersion program strands will be needed (87 divided by 13 equals 6.69).
