There is a “Middle School Framework” resolution on the 4/19/17 PPS Board agenda. I have a hard time interpreting it. What does it mean? What difference will it make for students? What will it change from what now goes on in PPS? What would happen if the Board does not approve the resolution and PPS has to continue without a “framework?”
Skimming over it, I notice the following omissions:
(1) No mention of dual language immersion programs?
(2) No mention of more teachers of color or more bilingual teachers. Perhaps the framework should say “The racial composition of the middle grades educators as a group should reflect the racial composition of the middle grades student body.” And “Increasingly, middle school teachers should be bilingual.”
(3) No mention of the racial and family income of the student bodies. Perhaps the framework should say something like “No middle grades school shall have a student population that is more than 50% students eligible for free or reduced priced meals.”
(4) I am not included as an external stakeholder, so not as a stakeholder at all!
The PPS Board should either reject or change the framework.
