This an interesting, informative discussion with three articulate Hispanic school superintendents. It is now posted on the Portland Public School website. Watch it.
My frustration is with the questions asked, which were all rather general and lumped all minority students together.
There was not one question about the specific needs of Hispanic students. No questions about the need for more Hispanic teachers. No questions about the role of or need for more Spanish dual language immersion programs. No questions about the current adequacy of ESL programs for Hispanics.
There was no recognition that Hispanic students are by far the largest student minority population in Oregon with 22.5% of all Oregon students and 61.4% of Oregon minority student enrollment.
It was a missed opportunity to talk about the specific needs of Hispanic students with three national experts.
