The Kentucky World Trade Center, in partnership with the University of Kentucky Asia Center, sponsored a key policy-leader mission to China in 2006. "The purpose of the mission was to bring together a cross-section of Kentucky leaders in government, business and education. The group's charge was to examine the dynamic intersection between international economic development and education, and its impact on the Commonwealth. China was selected because of its emerging importance in the global economy and existing activity with Kentucky." In the groups report "Positioning Kentucky as a Leader in International Education and Business," the following recommendations are made:
1. Designate a statewide International Education Week.
2. Re-designate Kentucky trade offices established in countries outside the U.S. as Kentucky Trade and Education Offices.
3. Promote international education and exchange programs between Kentucky and other countries.
4. Expand opportunities to study world languages in Kentucky.
5. Develop innovative programs to encourage more students to study international affairs and world languages at all levels.
6. Establish a joint House-Senate oversight committee to coordinate international economic and education activities in the Commonwealth.
7. Sponsor through the Kentucky Governor's office a Southeast States Regional Conference in 2009 on International Economic and Education Opportunities with the goal of developing a regional plan of action.
8. Increase opportunities for international experience involving collaboration among legislators, educators, and business.
9. Improve the climate for international visitors to Kentucky.
