Eugene Register-Guard article "UO considers playing football game in China in 2009" by Rob Moseley:
The University of Oregon, which considers itself a leader nationally in the marketing and promotion of its athletics programs, is trying to expand the reach of those efforts to new horizons.
The UO athletic department is exploring the idea of playing a football game in China to open the 2009 season. It would potentially be the first game sanctioned by either the NFL or the NCAA played in that country after an NFL game scheduled for this month was postponed for at least two years.
The game is the brainchild of UO director of football operations Jeff Hawkins; Jim Warsaw, founder of the University's Warsaw Sports Marketing Center; and UO Vice Provost for International Affairs/Outreach Chunsheng Zhang.
When told of the idea, UO athletic director Pat Kilkenny said, "It's Oregon, it's innovative, it's creative, it's great exposure," according to senior associate athletic director for external affairs Mike Marlow....
nice initiative
