There are parents around the state of Oregon organizing and fighting to make our schools more relevant to the world our children will live in. They are all my heroes. One set of parents will be at the Portland Public School Board meeting tonight pushing for a French immersion charter school in Portland. Another set of parents is pressing the Lake Oswego School District to offer Spanish and Mandarin immersion programs. This group, the Advocates for World Languages at the Lake Oswego School District, has a new website. From their website (here):
Who we are:
We are parents petitioning the Lake Oswego School District to offer a K-12 world language program, starting with elementary language immersion in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. We want children in our community to thrive in a global economy by achieving fluency in a second language.
Our Mission:
We believe that innovative, world-class programs will enhance the reputation and quality of the school district. We want the Lake Oswego School District to put children first and offer programs with the futures of our youngest children in mind.
Why immersion?
Research shows that language immersion programs are the most effective method to teach a second language. Early second language programs drive academic achievement. Once established, language immersion programs cost no more than regular academic programs.
