Portland Public School staff estimates (here) that enrollment in its foreign language immersion programs will reach 4,500 by school year 2015-16 “with no additional programs added and no further expansion of existing programs.” That is up from 3,309 currently, and with annual growth of about 300 each year.
PPS currently has 43,314 students in its district schools (adding charters, head start, community based and special service programs makes the current total 47,288). So PPS is heading for having more than 10% of its district school students in foreign language immersion programs.
