Speaking of the online gaming environment and fourteen year old boys, Constance Squire, a senior policy analyst in the White House Office of Science and Technology, says at the Apsen Ideas Festival:
Where you are reading college level texts and yet are actually solving your own comprehension problems on the fly, which is fairly amazing. So why does that work? Part of the reason that it works is that overwhelmingly games are an environment where puzzling through the problem is extremely high status. It is where being smart is very high social status. It is where having differentiated knowledge is very high social status. An so what happens is that you create these communities around the games that do an incredible amount of intellectual work and when they're done with the work, they will leave the game and go on to another game that is more challenging. Can you imagine if we had that kind of environment in classrooms?
